(KMOV.com) – The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new flu vaccine made without eggs or using the influenza virus.
What makes this vaccine so special? Experts say it can prevent seasonal flu.
The vaccine is called “Flu-Blok” and is approved for use in patients who are 18 to 49 years of age. It was created using DNA technology and an insect virus.
The FDA says the new technology offers the potential for faster start-up of the manufacturing process of the vaccine in the event of a pandemic. But there are possible side effects of the new vaccine, experts say, including head aches, fatigue and muscle aches. Those are the same typical symptoms that you can get from the conventional vaccines.
With this vaccine, there has been research that suggests it is more effective if you exercise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports you are 62 percent less likely to get the flu if you are vaccinated. Researchers at Iowa State University say if you work out after getting the vaccine, your risk of getting the flu can go down even more.
Experts believe that exercise helps the vaccine work by activating the immune system.
