ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A GasBuddy.com expert says gas prices should drop in St. Louis before the weekend, but they will remain considerably higher than a year ago.

Gas prices continue to be a major strain as on Thursday they paid on average 39 Cents more per gallon than last year.  Crude oil prices have fallen below $88 per barrel, but gas prices have been slow to follow.

There are more factors into gas prices like efficiency of oil refineries.

“Midwest refineries are outperforming all the other parts of the country,” said Gregg Laskoski of GasBuddy.com.  “That coupled with oil prices down is going to suggest a decline in gasoline prices in the next few days.”

Laskoski says we should also see prices go down in the fall and winter months ahead as demand lowers.  But he still expects prices to be higher than last year.

“That’s one of the problems we’re seeing across the country,” he said. “You’re seeing prices well above what we were accustomed to.”

News 4 took the mixed news to drivers at a gas station in Sunset Hills.

“And that’s not good news at all,” said Kevin Montgomery. “I would love prices to be lower especially if they are supposed to be lower since they’re refining oil. Plus it’s nearing winter when people are driving less. So it’s very inconvenient that most my money goes toward gas.”
