ELLISVILLE, Mo. (KMOV) -- Embattled Ellisville Mayor Adam Paul walked out on the city council in protest before the council made a decision Monday to impeach him out of office.

The council voted 5 to 1 to impeach Paul as Ellisville Mayor.

“Shame on you,” Paul’s attorney Chet Pleban said to each member of the council during his closing argument.

Pleban said he was done with council and was going home to watch the NCAA basketball championship game on TV.

Pleban’s remarks were interrupted with applause from citizens in the audience when he spoke about Paul not getting a fair hearing. He said he and Paul were not interested in staying for a vote that they already knew was pre-determined.

Prosecutor Keith Cheung in his closing argument said Paul did not, “grasp the office of mayor.”.

City officials accused Paul of violating the city charter several times by trying to circumvent the council and being disrespectful of council members.

“The bigger picture is the conduct and behavior of Mayor Paul,” said Cheung.

Paul has called the proceedings a “kangaroo court,” and the reason he’s being run out of office is his opposition to tax breaks for a new proposed Walmart.

As he left the auditorium at St John’s church, Paul says he’ll appeal the impeachment decision in circuit court.
