A report released this week by Ameren Missouri shows its rate of return for 2012 was higher than what they’re authorized to make.

It brings about the question on how the company can justify a request to the state to tack on a surcharge to customer bills.

Ameren Missouri is pushing the legislature to pass a law allowing utilities to add a surcharge to bills to pay for infrastructure improvements.

Consumer groups say Ameren’s report is proof it’s not needed.

But an Ameren official told News Four last year was unique because of the abnormally hot summer and a significant refund from a federal lawsuit.

The officials said earnings from this year are expected to be lower.
