ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- St. Louis police say they are searching for a man who shot a gas station clerk after an argument with the gunman’s girlfriend on Tuesday night in north St. Louis

Police said the shooting happened about 10 p.m. at the BP gas station at Bircher Boulevard and Marcus Avenue.

Police said a woman was trying to buy cigarettes inside the gas station convenience store. When the clerk told her that the card would not go through, the woman argued with the clerk and then walked out of the store.

Police said the woman’s boyfriend walked in holding handgun a short time later. As the clerk came from behind the counter with a gun, the suspect fired once, hitting the clerk in the stomach.

One of the clerk’s coworkers called for medical help. The clerk, 30, was taken to a St. Louis hospital and is listed in serious condition.

News 4 obtained the store’s surveillance video, which shows the suspect shooting the clerk before walking out of the store. The suspect was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans at the time of the shooting.
