BRIDGETON (KMOV.com) -- A putrid smell had some residents in Bridgeton covering their faces when they headed outside. Some complained the stench was nside their own homes.
Residents said the smell was horrid. There were some residents in St. Ann who said they could smell it too.
A News 4 photographer went out to Bridgeton and said the smell was so bad, it made his eyes burn.
“I got out of the car and I did not know what hit me. It just stunk horrible,” said resident Maria Loness, “I didn't know what it was. And then my kids had just gotten dropped off and they thought it was a dead animal somewhere.”
Residents said the odor has been bad for the last few days.
“As soon as you get off the highway you smell it pretty much,” said Jon Crawford. “It's unbearable to come outside sometimes.”
The source of the problem could come from the two landfills located in Bridgeton. But this isn’t the first time a strange smell has been noticed by residents.
Back in October 2012, the Pattonville fire district said a decomposing underground created heat and caused an odor. They were worried it could reach radioactive waste buried nearby.
Bridgeton city leaders, police and firefights have not said if both odors are connected.
