Aerials: Fire damages Doe Run smelter plant in Herculaneum

HERCULANEUM, Missuori (KMOV) – Fire crews battled a fire inside a power substation at the Doe Run Smelter Plant in Herculaneum, Missouri early Tuesday morning.

The electrical fire broke  in the 800 block of Main Street around 4:20 a.m.

Firefighters responded to the scene and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

“We appreciate the quick response by our staff and our local fire departments,” Gary Hughes, general manager of the facility said. “Fortunately no one was hurt. We’re presently looking into the cause of the fire and assessing any damage.”

The Doe Run Plant operates a round-the-clock lead smelter that produces lead and by-products from lead concentrates.

The plant produces products used in computer screens, car batteries and protective equipment.
