ALTON, Ill. (KMOV) – Authorities are investigating the suspicious death of an Alton woman who was found dead inside a home fully engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning.

Fire fighters were called to the scene of a one-story house fire at 1:30 a.m. on the 1900 block of Orchard Blvd. They initiated a search after neighbors told crews there could be three people inside.

A 43-year-old woman was found dead in the basement of the home. Her two children were not inside the house and were later found at their father’s home, unharmed.

According to the Alton Police Chief David Hayes, the woman’s death is being investigated as suspicious and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning. It is still undetermined if the fire was related to her death.

The Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold reports the fire started inside an enclosed carport then quickly extended into the home. Fire authorities are calling it suspicious by the rapid pace the fire grew from the starting point. The heavy flames caused a partial collapse of the house.  An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Details into the police investigation have not been released at this time.

News 4 is on the scene and will continue to gather more information as it develops.
