Hartford, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A 23-year-old man is dead after an accident at an industrial site along the Mississippi River on Thursday evening, according to fire officials.

Hartford Fire Chief Dave Owens says the worker was hit by a four-ton propeller at National Maintenance, a boat repair company in the 400 block of S. Hawthorne.

Workers were reportedly attempting to remove the propeller when the man was struck.

Owens says the worker was knocked into the water for about 30 seconds. Efforts by coworkers and emergency responders to revive the man were not successful.
