ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Emergency workers responded to south St. Louis are a train derailed Thursday night.

According to reports, the train was near the intersection of Manchester and Hampton avenues when 12 cars hopped off the tracks. Officials said some of the cars nearly overturned.

Officials said the train cars were hauling taconite. Taconite is a rock with iron content and is considered a low-grade iron ore. It is not harmful to people or the environment.

Authorities said the tracks will have to be repaired before more rail traffic is allowed to use them.

No injuries were reported.
