ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Tuesday, it was announced nearly 100 new security cameras will go up in the Central West End.

The cameras are in response to a rash of armed robberies, including the attempt that  took the life of Megan Boken.

Washington University Medical Center is buying 60 new cameras, The Central West End Neighborhood Security Inititaive is adding 30 more.

“We know already there’s 100s of cameras inthe Central West End but they are mostly located on bsuinesses, condos, and that,” said Brooks Goedeker, Community Development Specialist for Washington University Medical Center. “These are to try to pick up every intersection every corner in the Central West End.”

Residents in the  Central West End say they look forward to the extra coverage.

“We saw that bike patrols while they work, they can’t be everywhere at all times,” said Yusef Scoggin. “So the cameras are going to add an additional layer to the crime fighting that we’re going to provide”

The total cost is about $750,000. About 16 cameras are already up, the rest should be installed in the next two to three months.

The camers will be similar to the high definition cameras used in the 21st ward.
