CLEBURNE — A residence near Cleburne had its roof ripped off as a violent tornado touched down around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Darrin Vasquez said it was "loud and very violent" as the storm created a "vacuum" that appeared to be lifting everything up.

"Thank God we're all right. We all said our prayers," Vasquez said.

He used a mattress to shield his family from debris in a bathroom of their home.

Parts of Cleburne southwest of downtown saw trees toppled, power lines down and street flooding. Gerard Elementary School was damaged by the storm. A house-to-house search of the worst-hit area was being planned after power was cut off.

Officials said there were no reports of deaths or injuries.

State trooopers were keeping unauthorized onlookers out of the damage zone.
