(KMOV) – The St. Louis County Health Department gave more details on an employee accused of using his own business to trick the county into paying for his expensive lifestyle.

Health officials aren’t saying how much money Edward Mueth took from them over a five-year period but they do not believe it was in the millions.

News 4’s Julian Johnson tracked down Mueth’s family at their home in Webster Groves. The family answered the door but was quick to turn him away.

County officials say Gateway Technical Solutions was owned by Mueth and one official said he used it to swindle money.

“This guy set up a company with fictitious names. He had inside information on what was supposed to be a competitive bid. Did we get the best value for our dollar?”

Mueth took his own life last week, the day before he was set to answer questions, directly related to the situation.

Gunn estimates paying Mueth’s company over $1 million for services and goods. Now they’re double checking invoices to find out where he may have overcharged or shorted them.

Health officials say they’ve even talked to people claiming to work for Mueth’s company.

News 4 asked the health director if this could be more far-reaching that just Mueth. He said as the investigation goes on, that’s one of the things they will be looking at.

The health director called this a tragedy all around and said the department will move forward without any interruption to services.
