(KMOV) – Police continue to search for a 23-year-old suspect who shot an off-duty police officer in north St. Louis Wednesday night.
According to St. Louis police, the officer was shot in the leg by man in the 5900 block of Lalite. He was transported to the hospital, where he continues to recover. The St. Louis Police Department sent out a tweet the officer was conscious and breathing.
The victim’s brother-in-law said the officer was sent to the area to ease a domestic situation between his sister and a male acquaintance that he believes spun out of control. The officer’s sister lives on the block where the shooting took place.
SWAT set up a perimeter around the home where they believed the suspect lived. They could not find the suspect and the standoff ended early Thursday morning.
Witnesses told police they thought he may have been hiding in a home nearby. Officers barricaded part of the streets for hours but he still was not located.
St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson say the suspect is a known felon who has had plenty of run-ins with police before. They do not know if he was also shot.
Officers are now piecing together what led up to the shooting.
“Now the investigation starts to try to identify anything that led up to the shooting,” said Dotson. “We do have the officer’s weapon, we do have another weapon, so our investigation here is just now beginning.”
Police say the officer remains in good spirits.
