PONTOON BEACH, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Firefighters in Pontoon Beach extinguished a raging house fire that started in a single-story home early Monday morning.

Pontoon Beach fire crews got the call to responded to the home on Shirlwin Drive around 5:45 a.m.  When firefighters arrived, they reported heavy smoke coming from the roof.  A short time later, flames were seen through the roof.

Firefighters are still on the scene putting out hot spots and mopping up, but the bulk of the flames have been extinguished.

According to reports, the home is considered to be a total loss.  The roof of the home was destroyed and the rest of the home suffered severe smoke and water damage.

A neighbor smelled smoke and rushed next door and woke up everyone.  The three residents and four animals were said to have escaped the fire without injury.

Fire officials believe a lightning strike caused the fire.  Although the emergency call came out around 5:45 a.m., they believe the strike could have happened around 2 a.m.  They are not sure if it struck the home directly or if it hit something else resulting in the house fire.

Crews from Long Lake, Granite City, Mitchell, Fairmont City and Maryville assisted.
