BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV) – Authorities were investigating after a suspect was shot and killed during a brief foot chase with police in Belleville Wednesday morning.

Illinois State Police say officers responding to a disturbance at a tavern near West Main Street around 10:45 a.m. and found two men kicking cars and trying to damage a window.

Authorities say the two men fled on foot and were chased by police.

Police said one of the suspects threatened the officer. That’s when the officer shot the man, 19, in the chest. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

The second suspects was apprehended and transported to the hospital because he appeared to be under the influence of some sort of substance.

The incident shut down West Main between 74th and 78th streets. Police said it would be closed for at least an hour.

Authorities said the officer involved in the shooting is 33 years old and has been with the Belleville Police Department since 2004.
