BELLEVILLE, Ill.—Police in Belleville say they’re investigating reports that female students at Althoff High School were secretly videotaped by members of one of the school’s sports teams.
Sources told News 4 school staff was told on May 1 that some players on the school’s baseball team may have video recorded juvenile female students in the locker room.
Police said the school’s staff did their own investigation of the matter before notifying authorities May 3.
St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly says a special prosecutor has been assigned to the case at his request because of a conflict in his office.
Police said they have worked with Kelly’s office to seize any devices that may have been sued in the alleged recordings.
According to Illinois law, it is illegal to record unauthorized video in a restroom or locker room. The severity of the crime increases if victims are under 18 and convicted suspects could face up to five years in prison.
