(KMOV.com) – East St. Louis Police said they have also noticed a spike of speeders on the Eads Bridge.

Construction crews have been working there for months and the speed limit is 25 miles per hour.

Lieutenant Bobby Cole of the East St. Louis Police Department said he has recently noticed an increase of speeders, so he assigned an officer to the bridge.

“Yesterday in total,” said Cole, “we did close to 300 (tickets).”

Officers are using their new handheld speed cameras. The device can snap a picture and the driver may not find out until a ticket is sent in the mail. A ticket issued by the East St. Louis Police Department in a construction zone can cost $375.

Some people who live in East St. Louis said this is a way for police to make money.

“Actually it’s our way of helping someone not get killed in a construction zone,” said Lt. Cole.

Police said some of the money earned goes back to the police department.
