ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – Police say a woman found dead inside a smoke-filled south St. Louis house was the victim of a homicide.

According to officials, the fire started at a home of 49-year-old Brinda Babcock in the 4000 block of Giles around 12:30 a.m.

Authorities said her roommate came home and opened the door to a room full of smoke. She then went next door to call for help.

Firefighters arrived and put out the fire, discovering Babock unconscious in the living room. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Babcock’s death has been classified as a homicide, noting her injuries were not considered consistent with a small fire. The medical examiner had not yet provided the exact cause of death.

Arson, bomb and homicide investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
