(KMOV) –A car burst into flames on a busy Los Angeles-area intersection and a nearby police officer jumped right into the flames to rescue the driver.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Donald Thompson said “they were just screaming get him out, get him out, don't let him burn."

He was off-duty when he saw the car on fire along a Los Angeles highway and the driver trapped inside.

Cell phone video captured the action as Officer Thompson risked his life to pull the driver to safety.

“That was just the time when I said it's now or never either you're going to get him out or he's just going to burn alive,” said Thompson.

Two good Samaritans who were driving by also helped the officer get the driver away from the fully engulfed car fire.

The driver is expected to survive.
