(KMOV) -- Forget having just old school photographs: News 4 got the scoop on new technology that could get more bad guys off the street - CSI style.

The Leica C-10 the first to ever be used in the state of Illinois, now right in the Metro East.

CSI investigators will still do everything they used to when they encounter a major crime scene.

But now they'll have a 3D tool to scan a room or city block with literal laser precision and take pictures, so in no time flat the scene can go virtual.

St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly says the technology could prove critical in the courtroom, virtually putting a juror right in the middle of the crime scene.

The cutting edge technology came at a price tag of $150,000 paid for by a federal grant.

Investigators say it could prove to be worth every penny.

“It's going to increase the chances we can get a just conviction,” Kelly said.

The tool's already been used at two crime scenes and could be coming to a courtroom by year's end.
