(KMOV.com) -- Thousands of Cardinals fans can use a new route to get to Busch Stadium. Construction has finally cleared for traffic to pass by the area where the old Cupples 7 building once stood in downtown St. Louis.
The entire block at Spruce and 11th Streets had been shut down for at least a year, but the St. Louis City Street Department rushed to finish the project just in time for the baseball playoffs.
The Street Department shut down Spruce because they said the Cupples 7 warehouse was unstable.
The warehouse was demolished in July 2013. It took three months to tear down the structure because crews wanted to save some of the brick and heavy timber.
Then the street department got involved and cleaned up the mess and repaved the sidewalk.
Resident said they are really happy with the new changes.
“It was just a congested nightmare after a game or even before a game,” said resident Richard Speckhals.
City officials said they still have some work to do, but they hope to finish everything within 30 days.
