Money stolen from donation box at Fairview Heights church

(KMOV.com) – Police are searching for the person responsible for stealing money from a donation box at a Metro East church.

Police said the theft occurred Saturday at the First Baptist Church in the 10000 block of the Lincoln Trail in Fairview Heights. Police said a donation box was established during the funeral of Krystle Flaherty.

Flaherty’s family was trying to raise money for Krystle's daughter, who is 3 years old. When the funeral ended, members of Flaherty’s family noticed all of the donations, with the exception of a $50 check, were missing.

“Do you not understand that this child has gone through such a tragedy already through her three short years in life?" asked Terri Halvachs, Krystle's mother and grandmother to Lilly. "And then you take take what her friends and family lovingly gave her?  It just breaks my heart.”

According to the family the box was full before the theft.

A fund has been set up for Flaherty's daughter' at the Bank of Belleville, which is located at 720 West Main Street, Belleville, IL 62220. Donations should be made to the Lilly's Benefit Fund.
