(KMOV) – Attorney General Chris Koster announced Monday that his office is filing seven civil lawsuits and two criminal cases against car dealers and financers in Missouri.

Car dealers and financers in Springfield, St. Louis, Lee’s Summit and Ozark failed to provide titles for vehicles sold, which is required by law.

Koster said that “under Missouri law, consumers purchasing vehicles do not legally own those vehicles until they have the titles signed over to them, in their possession”.

Consumer complaints led the Attorney General’s Office to investigate a number of companies which failed to give buyers the title to their vehicles.

The companies Koster has filed cases against are: Summit West Auto Group of Lee’s Summit, Montgomery Auto Group of Springfield, M&P Auto Group of Springfield, KB Motorspots of Springfield, 417 Auto Group of Ozark, Top Quality Auto of St. Louis and Auto Credit Mart, LLC of St. Louis.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the companies sold more than $500,000 in vehicles without providing titles to more than 100 consumers.
