(KMOV) – In light of a rash of shootings in St. Louis over the weekend, News 4 tracks what's being done to keep the celebrations safe.
The opening ceremony for "First Night at Grand Center" begins at 6p.m. as the crowds really start showing up at 7:30 and it all concludes with fireworks at midnight.
Non-alcoholic First Night tends to attract pretty tame partiers, but it's the dangerous ones that have police most concerned. A rash of shootings over the weekend left four dead and seven wounded and highlighted an ongoing problem.
Police are worried those who would indiscriminately shoot at others might also be careless enough to use guns as noisemakers, not caring where their bullets landed or who they hurt.
News 4’s Russell Kinsaul talked with police and organizers of the largest event in the area to find out how they plan to keep the event safe for all ages in attendance.
