ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV) – A former Fort Zumwalt middle school teacher on Tuesday pleaded guilty to charges he secretly videotaped fifth-grade boys as they undressed summer camp shower.

Matt Hansen, 39, a former seventh-grade math teacher at West Middle School, pleaded guilty to eight felony counts of attempted production of child pornography. Hansen also faces state charges for possession of child porn.

Hansen’s sentencing has been set for Oct. 4. Each of the eight counts carries up to 30 years in prison and fines of $250,000.

Before his resignation as teacher, Hansen assisted with a camp known as the Outdoor Education Program. During the camp at Cuivre River State Park in Lincoln County, Hansen helped look after fifth-grade students from Progress South, Lewis and Clark and Dardenne elementary schools.

According to a letter sent by Fort Zumwalt Superintendent Bernard DuBray to parents, Hansen may have video recorded male students as they were undressing during a camping trip.

The letter said Hansen “secretly and inappropriately videotaped” about 80 male fifth-grade students in “various stages of undress as they readied themselves for evening showers.”

Police said the students did not know they were being recorded and no evidence suggests Hansen shared the videos with anyone else.

Authorities said all the recordings took place in the from 2007 to 2012 and that Hansen hid cameras in a room where the young boys would undress before showering.

The Ottumwa Courier in Iowa reports that police arrested Hansen on June 8, 2012 after he threatened to jump off a cell phone tower.

Hansen has been a teacher at West Middle School since 2004.
