(KMOV) – Police say a bicyclist from Belleville was killed after being run over by a vehicle in Smithton, Ill. Tuesday morning.

According to police, 39-year-old construction worker John Fudge was riding a motorized bicycle on westbound Douglas near Rte. 159 around 5:30 a.m. when he lost control of the bike.

Fudge fell into the eastbound lanes of traffic and a motorist heading westbound stopped to see if he needed help.

Police said as the person was calling 9-1-1, a car traveling eastbound on Douglas ran over Fudge.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the 54-year-old motorist didn’t see the fallen bicyclist and stopped after he realized he hit something. Police said the driver was cooperating with investigators and was distraught.

Smithton Police Chief Brian Vielweber says no charges are expected.
