(KMOV.com) – Affton residents said the response from firefighters to a garage fire was too slow.

A lit bottle rocket landed in a man’s garage in the 4600 block of Siebert Saturday. Firefighters said the blaze destroyed the garage and spread to other homes. Residents said it took 10-15 minutes for firefighters to arrive even though the nearest fire station is ¼ of a mile down the street.

Affton Fire Protection Chief Jim Fritz said that particular station does not have a full time pumper truck, but only has an ambulance.

Fritz told News 4 the crews arrived within five minutes and that their response time was appropriate. The crews arrived on scene from the department’s two other fire stations. Fritz said the fire department meets all necessary guidelines.

Residents said they may start a petition to have a pumper truck at the station in question full time.
