ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- A major construction project that will affect many drivers starts tonight on Interstate 270.

Crews will begin lane closures on northbound I-270 between I-44 and Manchester Road so MoDOT can widen the interstate.

MoDOT promises that while the lane closures could mean headaches in the short term, drivers will benefit once the project is complete with an additional lane in each direction.

"Today it could take you upwards of ten minutes to travel that corridor during rush hour.  This [project] will easily save several minutes for that commute," MODOT Engineer Michelle Voegele said.

Crews will begin to close lanes on northbound I-270 weekdays from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through early May.

Adding an additional lane in each direction brings the total to five lanes northbound, and five lanes southbound.  The lanes will be narrowed to about 11-feet each.

Unlike the I-44 re-striping a few years back, MoDOT says the lanes will be paved and re-striped, to avoid navigation confusion.

The entire project will span two years.  Work on the southbound lanes will begin in 2013.
