11 cars involved in chain-reaction crash on Poplar Street Bridge, I-70

(KMOV.com) -- Police think a two-vehicle accident on the Poplar Street Bridge caused a string of multi-vehicle accidents on eastbound Interstate 70 in downtown St. Louis on Thursday.

Police said a total of three accidents happened in a short period of time around or after 11 a.m.  They report the first accident happend on the Poplar Street Bridge.  It involved two vehicles and no injuries were reported.  This accident caused a back up on the Interstate 55 exit ramp from I-70.

The second accident happened on eastbound I-70 near the I-55 exit.  The accident involved three vehicles and no serious injuries were reported. 

A short time later, a third accident also happened near the same area of I-70.  Six vehicles were involved in the third accident.  Authorities said two people were suffered injuries.  They were transported to an area hospital, but authorities said their injuries are not life threatening.

Police were forced to shut down eastbound I-70 for 15 minutes while crews worked to clear the wreckage.
