ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- MoDOT says only one lane on Interstate 64 will be open going into Thursday morning.
On Monday and Tuesday, crews were forced to close all westbound lanes from the Poplar Bridge to past Busch Stadium while they removed the top layer of the driving surface and prepared the roadway for resurfacing.
Two westbound lanes on I-64 opened at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, but one of the lanes closed again and will remain closed until 3 a.m. Thursday morning.
Crews started chipping out and repairing bad spots in the concrete over the weekend, but MoDOT officials said weak spots were more extensive than originally thought and had to extend the work into the week.
“Once we opened up the bridge, we found it was far more deteriorated than we thought and so the message I have for you is we’re going to leave this full closure in place at least through the morning rush,” said MoDOT engineer Ed Hassinger.
Hassinger added that crews will be working around the clock to get the repairs done quickly and expects to have the interstate open again later in the week.
The exit ramps to Interstate 70 and Interstate 55 will remain open.
