ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The Missouri Department of Transportation has extended the closure of the Interstate 70 express lanes downtown to complete needed construction on the Missouri I-70 interchange for the New Mississippi River Bridge project.

According to MoDOT officials, this work, scheduled for later this year, was accelerated to let crews take advantage of the current express lane closure.  By extending the current maintenance closure, MoDOT can reduce the overall amount of time the express lanes were anticipated to be closed for the Missouri Interchange project combined.

The contractor performing the repairs on the I-70 interchange has up to another 45 days to complete the additional work.  By accelerating the work, that additional closure has been reduced to just over two weeks.

The existing long term lanes closures on eastbound I-64 (between Jefferson and the Poplar Street Bridge) and eastbound I-70 (between Madison and Broadway) will reopen by November 1. This will give traffic heading into Illinois through downtown a little extra roadway space, during the extension. The ramp from 11st Street to eastbound I-70 will also open before November 1.

MoDOT will also close two lanes on westbound I-70 between Cass and Madison October 22-24 at 8 p.m. for construction on the I-70 interchange. The lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning. When lanes reopen at 5 a.m. October 25, traffic on westbound I-70 between Cass and Madison will temporarily be on three narrowed lanes.

In addition, the ramp from westbound I-70 to Madison will close at 8 p.m. on October 24th and remain closed for the next 45 days.  Crews will reconstruct the ramp in its new location for the I-70 interchange. The work and Madison ramp closure on October 24th will be rescheduled around any Cardinals’ post season home games.

All work is weather permitting.
