(KMOV) -- Dense fog has settled over much of the St. Louis area and could cause a potentially dangerous situation for morning commuters.

4Warn Meteorologist Matt Chambers said the fog is moving from north to south.  Areas north of St. Louis are already experiencing the heaviest fog with visibility less than a quarter mile in some spots.  Areas south of St. Louis can expect fog to thicken as throughout the morning.

News 4 crews have been out on the road this morning and report visibility is very low.  For those who have a long commute, it may not be a bad idea to leave a few minutes early.

The fog should begin to decrease around 8:00 a.m. and will continue to lift throughout the morning hours.
