(KMOV.com) -- A deadly crash involving a fire truck nearly shut down a portion of Interstate 70 Thursday morning and killed an O'Fallon, Missouri man.
According to authorities, a truck, traveling along I-70 at Mid Rivers Mall Drive, slammed into the back of a fire truck around 12:18 a.m.
The vehicle was being driven by Chad Zaiz, 30. Police said Zaiz crashed his Ford pick-up truck into the back end of the fire truck. Zaiz died at the scene. Five firefighters received minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital, but a police sergeant on the scene said they are expected to be okay.
At one point, all but one westbound lane of I-70 was closed, causing a major traffic snag. All lanes have reopened since the accident, but it took crews over four hours to clear the scene.
Emergency crews were investigating an earlier accident near the same location when the accident happened. Officials said all emergency vehicles had their lights activated.
