ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- The state of Missouri is planning to spend $55 million to revamp the eastbound ramps of the Poplar Street Bridge which would mean removing Interstate 70 access into Illinois.

St. Clair County leaders argue the move would add time to drivers' commutes and hamper business in southern Illinois.  MoDOT officials tell News 4 the ramp will have to be moved and eastbound drivers from Interstate 70 in Missouri could travel across the new Mississippi River Bridge when it is completed in two years.

"These ramps are not going to last much longer," Ed Hassinger, MoDOT district engineer, said.  "We have put temp supports under them to buy us time in order to get to a point where we can replace them that time is running out."

The East-West Gateway Council says it will look for other options and make a decision this fall.
