(KMOV.com) -- Police were forced to shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 at Chestnut Street in downtown St. Louis after a vehicle pulling a trailer hit a barrier wall.

Authorities said the accident happened around 5:00 Wednesday morning in the depressed section of I-70.  According to reports, when the car hit the concrete barrier, it knocked chunks of concrete into the westbound lanes of I-70.

One westbound lane of I-70 was closed while crews cleaned up the debris.  Emergency crews managed to clear the scene around 7 a.m. and all lanes have been reopened. Police did not say if the driver of the vehicle was injured.

MoDOT officials said, depending on weather, a crew will be out to the scene later to assess the damage to the barrier.  If the damage is severe enough, they will fix it.  If this will impact traffic for the afternoon and evening commutes on Wednesday, News 4 will be sure to let you know.
