ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Numerous cars became disabled Monday morning after striking debris along Interstate 55 in south St. Louis, forcing police to close multiple lanes on the interstate.

All lanes on northbound I-55 have reopened after crews cleared up wreckage from an accident that disabled six cars near the Broadway exit.  The vehicles reportedly hit some type of debris in the roadway that was believe to have fallen off a truck.

The disabled vehicles were blocking the right lanes of the highway earlier Monday morning, but have since been towed away.  It took crews nearly three hours to clean up the mess.

Traffic in the area was backed up for miles forcing some commuters to seek an alternate route.
