Metro East man charged with wife's murder

WOOD RIVER, Ill. (AP/KMOV) -- A Wood River man is charged with murder after claiming to police he shot his wife to death because he thought she was a burglar.
Vernon Coates, 54, called police stating that he shot his 45-year-old wife, Audrey Coates, as she was entering their Wood River home on Wednesday night because he thought she was breaking in.
PoliceShe was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead that night.
Further investigation led to first murder charges being field against Coates. The charges state that he intentionally shot his wife.
Coates is currently being held on $1,000,000 bond.
