Man accused of snatching socks in Belleville -- again
09:04 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 9, 2008
BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Police in Belleville, Ill., say the sock bandit is at it again.
St. Clair County prosecutors have charged 36-year-old James Dowdy with residential burglary after police say he was caught with socks taken from a Belleville home early Monday.
Dowdy was sentenced to prison in 2004, 1997 and 1994 for various periods, all for burglary-related charges tied to his efforts to get women's socks.
On Monday, a man called police to report that his daughter had heard someone in the basement of their house and that a man was spotted crawling out of a basement window.
Police dogs were called in and led officers to Dowdy's home. Inside, authorities say police found socks that had been taken from the basement laundry room.
