02:27 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 8, 2008
St. Louis (KMOV) – The FAA is investigating the crash of a single engine plane in Jersey County, Ill.
Jersey County police said a small experiment airplane crashed at the Jerseyville Municipal Airport around 7:00 a.m. when the aircraft flipped over on a grass runway as it was attempting to land.
The pilot, David Fleetwood of Alton, Ill., was taken to the hospital but the injuries were not believed to be serious.
Jersey County Sherrif Mark Kallal said Fleetwood realized he was going too fast upon landing and tapped the brakes. He felt a bump and the plane tipped over.
The crash did damage to one wing, the prop and the cabin.
Kallal said the builder of the plane examined the aircraft Tuesday morning and said it was not designed to land on a grass runway.
