(KMOV) - More than a year after the suicide of a Dardenne Prairie teenager, the state may be close to taking action against those who use the internet as a weapon.
A state task force is finalizing details on a proposal that would make it a felony if an adult harasses a child over the internet or through other forms of media.
Governor Matt Blunt organized the group last month after hearing about Megan Meier, 13.
Her parents say she killed herself after receiving cruel messages online.
Megan's mother Tina Meier testified before that task force about what her daughter went through leading up to her death.
Megan's family says an internet hoax on Myspace pushed their daughter over the edge.
What was done to Megan may have broken the rules of right and wrong, but it didn't violate any state laws which outrage her mother Tina.
Tina sees that the governor's task force must weigh a person's right to free speech against protecting people from bullies, but at the same time is dedicated to making sure laws are passed to prosecute cyber bullies.
