(KMOV) -- Some Metro East parents are outraged over an asbestos removal project planned for their children's school.
Officials in the Southwestern school district plan to start part of this asbestos removal project at Brighton West Elementary School while school is still in session.
After hearing from concerned parents, the project is now on hold.
Renovation plans call for five days of asbestos removal from the school’s boiler room in the basement.
Parents were told that the work would be done at night and that it would be closely monitored to meet federal and state standards, but that it would be done before the end of this school year.
Parents were outraged at the risk of their children being exposed to asbestos.
A local contractor tried to assure them that the air would be monitored, but parents were not convinced.
The superintendent explained that the work has to be done to meet construction deadlines, but eventually agreed to consent with the contractor about the construction schedule.
The asbestos removal is part of a $3 million renovation project.
According to the superintendent, the school board will ultimately decide whether they will interrupt the construction schedule.
