William Weitzel

Sheriff Oliver Glenn Boyer believes that William Weitzel, 36, became upset when his former girlfriend was in the bed with another man.

Weitzel allegedly entered the victim’s bedroom, threatened both with a small caliber handgun, and then shot the man twice. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to the hand, torso, and a grazing wound to the head.

Weitzel then allegedly held both subjects at gunpoint for about two hours.

Weitzel reportedly called his parents to the scene. When his parents arrived they unsuccessfully attempted to convince Weitzel to call the police and an ambulance for the victim. At one point, Weitzel and his father fought for the handgun, but his father was unable to remove the handgun.

Authorities say Weitzel held all four victims at gunpoint for about an hour before calling 911.

When deputies arrived, Weitzel was taken into custody without incident.

The shooting victim is a 26-year-old white male from Springfield, Ill. He was transported to a local hospital, and is in stable condition.

The homeowner’s eight-year-old son was present at the time, but was unaware of the incident, and unharmed.

Weitzel is being held in the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office Jail on first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and felonious restraint.

He is being held on a $250,000.00 cash-only bond.
