Comment: Mo. lawmakers support bill allowing classroom spankings
10:23 PM CST on Thursday, February 19, 2009
ST. LOUIS (KMOV)-- Missouri lawmakers want everyone to be safe in the classroom, but you might not like one of their ideas.
The legislature is considering a bill that would allow, but would not require, school uniforms.
It would also protect teachers from some lawsuits.
And here's the controversial point, it would restrict, but still allow students to be spanked.
The house unanimously supported the bill.
If House Bill 96 stands, whenever a child is spanked at least two people would have to be present.
Why?
Legislators said that way it wards off any suggestions that the spanking was a sexual gesture.
The bill also looks at: adding violent behavior to a student’s record, making it harder to sue teachers, and allowing all Missouri school districts to require school uniforms.
House Bill 96 is now headed to the senate.
