Manhunt continues for gunman of University City police officer

St. Louis (KMOV) -- University City police sergeant Michael King, 50, was shot and killed while occupying his police cruiser in the 6600 block of Delmar Blvd. and Leland Ave. at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Friday, according to University City police.

 

Police said they are searching for 41-year-old Todd Sheppard, a person of interest, from the 4200 block of Swan in St. Louis City.

 

Police said Friday night King was in his squad car on Leland Ave. right off the Delmar Loop when the gunman walked up and fired several times. King had started his shift a little more than an hour earlier.

 

Shepard is described as a black male, 5-feet 11-inches in height, medium build and weighing 160 lbs. Police described the car he was driving as a light-colored 1993 Oldsmobile with a Missouri license plate number 2AB-28J.

 

King, a 25-year veteran on the University City Police Department, is survived by his wife and parents, according to police.

 

King lived in University City his entire life and attended Washington University, said police.

 

The last time a University City police officer was killed in the line of duty was 1976. King is the fourth officer killed on the job in University City’s 103-year history.

Visitation for Sgt. King will be held on Monday November 3rd, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Lupton Chapel at 7233 Delmar.

 

The funeral will take place on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Delmar. A procession will follow the service from University City to Sunset Memorial Cemetery in south St. Louis County in the 10100 block of Gravois.
