Despite report, lawyers say cancer rate higher in Cameron

CAMERON, Mo. (AP) -- Lawyers say their five-month investigation shows a larger than expected number of cancer cases in Cameron, despite a state report to the contrary.

A Kansas City personal injury law firm met with about 50 people yesterday, many of them diagnosed with brain tumors. Last week, a state epidemiologist said investigators found no statistical difference between the number of brain tumor cases in the area and statewide.

But Dr. James Dahlgren, a California toxicology expert, told the group gathered yesterday that the high rate is the after effect of the former Rockwool Industries insulation plant.

Dahlgren said the law firm is representing about 40 brain tumor cases in Cameron. He said that number is "higher than it should be" in the town of 6,500.
