FARMINGTON, Mo. (KMOV) -- A crew member was killed and two others, including a driver, were injured Saturday night when a race car jumped an embankment and became airborne.
The accident happened around 8 p.m. at St. Francois County Raceway near Farmington, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis.
Joe Reddick, a race car owner, said Dennis Frank and Lonnie Longman, crew members for Springfield, Ill.-based Standridge Motor Sports, were struck by the car.
Both men were transported by medical helicopter to St. Louis area hospitals, Park Hills Police Lt. Doug Bowles said.
Frank, 47, of Springfield, Ill., was pronounced dead at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center.
Longman, of Jackson, Mo., was taken to St. Louis Univeristy Hospital. His condition was not known.
The race car driver, identified as Tommy Worley Jr., 40, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in the St. Francois County area. He was treated and released, track owner and promoter Cory Franklin said.
Franklin said the veteran driver suffered a concussion and complained of knee and elbow pain.

Witnesses told police that two race cars, described as sprint cars, collided as they came to a curve. One flew up over an embankment, became airborne and jumped two sets of fences before ending up in a rear parking lot. The crew members were in an area near the parking lot, Park Hills Police Lt. Doug Bowles said.
Franklin said the fences are between 14- to 16-feet high and taller than the track’s insurance company requires. He said he would determine if the height was adequate following the accident.
The track holds races every Saturday night from mid-April through mid-October, according to a schedule on its Web site. Following the accident, the rest of the evening's events were postponed for about an hour.
About 1,500 people were watching the race from the grandstands when the accident happened, Franklin said.

Bowles said this is the first accident he could recall involving spectators at the raceway.
Franklin echoed that, saying he hadn't had an accident involving spectators in his six years as owner.
