PHOTOS Smithton suspect hospitalized following standoff with police

(KMOV) -- A Smithton, Illinois man is hospitalized with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a long standoff outside a home in the Metro East. About a dozen Illinois State Police cars and a SWAT team had surrounded the home through the morning Monday.
The incident started Monday morning around 4:00 a.m. at a home in the 4800 block of Rockledge Trail in Smithton, Ill.
The initial call came out as a domestic disturbance.
According to police, a man broke in through the back door of his estranged wife's home. He reportedly used to live there with the woman, but had moved out and was living with his parents. Police say that the woman had a restraining order against the suspect.
When the man broke in, four people were in the home - his estranged wife, their child, a babysitter and a friend.
Police say that at some point the babysitter and the child were able to get out of the house. They were not harmed.
Later, the suspect sent the friend out of the house to ask the police some questions. Police did not send the friend back into the home.
Police say that after that, a the estranged wife either escaped or was released and was able to get out of the home safely.
She told police she heard a gunshot as she was leaving.
Police found the man inside with a gunshot wound to his head. He is being treated at a local hospital where his condition has not been released.
