FREEBURG, Ill. (KMOV.com) - Police in Freeburg, Illinois are investigating after a cadaver dog was shot and killed with a pellet gun.

The dog’s owner Marla Vollmer says her 8-year-old dog named Rowdy died around 11 p.m. Friday night after he was shot on Tuesday.

“He was laying there so I called him and he lifted his head, but he did not come over,” said Vollmer.

At first, she wasn’t sure what was wrong but she quickly loaded him into the car for a 30-minute drive to the emergency center to get answers.

“There was no visible sign of anything being wrong,” said Vollmer.

Doctors took a closer look with an x-ray and found a projectile in his side. He was shot by a pellet gun in the front yard.

"It's a horrible feeling, it's just a horrible feeling," said Vollmer.

Rowdy underwent surgery for three hours. The pellet was lodged so deep in his body that doctors had to remove an 8-inch section of his bowel.

Rowdy is more than just a family pet, he is also a cadaver dog that detects human remains. It is something the black lab mix has done for six years.

“He’s been deployed on 35 area searches now over the course of the last 5.5 years in the area,” Vollmer said.

Vollmer is searching for answers of her own.

“We just want to find who did this. If they could just come forward,” said Vollmer.
