JENNINGS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Jennings drivers say a gaping hole sitting in the middle of McLaren Avenue is causing a safety concern for drivers and pedestrians.

“If it goes out into the street who knows, the street might cave in,” said Gerald Foster.

Drivers say they started noticing the issue a year ago. The hole stops oncoming traffic and has caused damage to cars.

“If somebody doesn’t notice it, they can just run over it,” said Shawme’ Smith.

Residents say they’ve called the Missouri American Water company to get answers but they’ve seen no progress.

The utility said the service line has a leak causing the hole. The line is on private property, a responsibility Missouri American Water says is up to the home owner to fix.

News 4 found St. Louis County would have to come out and they said they can make the fix for free through their Residential Water Service Line Program.

The program is available to homeowners in St. Louis County.
